IMAGES OF HOPE - Get creative with your community- Art competition. New webpages www.biblesociety.org.uk/imagesofhope
What would be your picture of hope? Could you paint something that illustrates hope for you? Could you draw on the Bible for inspiration?
That's the challenge being set by Bible Society as part of Hope 08, a year when the church is being motivated and mobilised to reach out to communities across the UK.
- Images of Hope is an art competition – run by churches, schools and youth groups throughout 2008. Bible Society is inviting young people and adults to illustrate a Bible Story of hope in their own way.
- An Event – the work of the winners will also be displayed at awards nights and exhibitions in the local community, possibly in a library, civic centre, or arts studio. These dates in your community diary during HOPE2008 can be publicised in our online calendar.
Inspiration in the Bible
It is hoped that in thinking about the Bible and its stories, the would-be artists will engage with Scripture - and discover its relevance for modern day life. Bible Society will provide churches and schools with advice on running the competition, and will supply Bibles to the winners. In some settings the work of the winners will be exhibited in exhibitions.
- 200 entries were recently made in a similar competition in Greater Manchester in 2007
- Seven schools in one area were involved
- Entries were based on everything from 'Abraham counting stars' to 'Moses and the burning bush'
- In Ramsbottom an amazing awards night and exhibition proved to be incredibly succesful with schools, churches and civic leaders
Images of Hope can be taylored to suit each local community according to the opportunities and challenges. Advice is available based on previous competitions.
In Harpurhey, the North Manchester Deanery competition was won by Kaylem Osbourne.
Kaylem painted a picture of Jesus riding a donkey into Jerusalem. He received a Bible as a prize - and his thrilled great-grandmother said, "We have been praying for Kaylem for quite a while as he is interested in Jesus, but can't make it to church. The art competition has been an answer to prayer."
- Why not speak to your local lower schools to see if they could participate in 'Images of Hope'
- Do you have a local library, civic centre who would host an exhibition?
- How about organising a Gala Awards Night and give your community the red carpet treatment
Insert Picture – click this button to insert a picture (picture of Kaylem). Once you have added the picture to your document you can right-mouse click and select image properties to set the image positioning.
Hope 08 is an ambitious project to mobilise churches across the UK to 'do more, do it together and do it in word and action.'
It's about churches joining forces to serve and witness to their communities, and major Christian organisations are working to build momentum behind the campaign.
Bible Society is involved to continue the campaigning work in the public square, opening dialogue with communities and individuals as we open the Bible in surprising or unusual ways.
